The University of Quebec’s Rimouski Institute of Marine Sciences (UQAR-ISMER) is presently welcoming applications from qualified foreign candidates for its 2021 ISMER PhD Excellence scholarships.
This scholarship award program intends to admit up to 10 new full-time candidates with diverse backgrounds who will commence their doctoral learning at ISMER in the fall 2021 or winter 2022 semester.
The Rimouski Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMER) unites a huge crucial mass of researchers and scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds who are devoted to discovery and improving knowledge of coastal environments, with a view to sustainable growth. Joined with the University of Quebec at Rimouski (UQAR), ISMER unites a community of professionals in chemistry, biology, geology, and physics.
They are especially interested in the operation of marine ecosystems in connection with climate change, the effects of human action on ecosystems, the improvement of marine bioresources, marine geology and natural hazards. The research work of ISMER professors and scholars is carried out all over the globe, from the Arctic to Africa to South America.
The institute’s objective is to contribute to the discovery and advancement of fundamental and applied knowledge of the marine and coastal environments, in order to be able to assess the effects of human actions on the environment and its resources. Born from the union of the Department of Oceanography of UQAR and INRS-Oceanology, ISMER formally began operations on 1st March 1999. At its inception, the Institute had 14 research professors. It currently has 23 positions of professor-researchers and 45 associate professors.

Benefits of ISMER PhD Excellence Scholarships
The scholarship award, valued at 20,000$ each year, will be for three years and would be granted to chosen applicants for the length of the program.
Eligibility for ISMER PhD Excellence Scholarships
These ISMER PhD Excellence Scholarships are available for candidates from Quebec, other Canadian provinces, or from all over the world.
Interested candidates must:
- Be able to start the doctoral thesis in the fall 2020 or winter 2021 semester.
- Satisfy the basic conditions for admission to the Ph.D. program in oceanography at ISMER.
- Have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.7 / 4.3 or the equivalent (ex. ≥ 14/20).
- The doctoral thesis must be carried out under the supervision of a professor from ISMER. The candidate should have gotten a letter of support from the professor in charge of one of the available projects.
- Be able to enrol (full time) in the PhD program in oceanography at ISMER at the time of gaining the scholarship award.
How to Apply for ISMER PhD Excellence Scholarships
Interested applicants have to submit a detailed CV (curriculum vitae; comprising scientific communications, scholarship awards, grants, expeditions, and so on), a motivation letter describing the applicant’s path and how this path is consistent with the proposed project and the doctoral program in oceanography at ISMER, all university transcripts, a letter of support from the professor in charge of the project, and three (3) recommendation letters (with one from a research advisor) in electronic format to the Program committee of graduate studies in oceanography at ISMER. Only finished applications that satisfy the conditions for this scholarship award program will be assessed by the selection committee after the application closing date. The final selection of applicants will be made during an in-person or virtual interview.
