Filmmakers Without Borders Grants 2021

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS (FWB) is providing assistance to autonomous filmmakers all over the world through grants and other funding enterprises in 2021. Acceptable projects are documentary films, narrative films, and new media projects that align with themes of empowerment, social justice, and cultural exchange.

FILMMAKERS WITHOUT BORDERS (FWB) is a 501c3 not-for-profit establishment that is devoted to empowering the coming generation of digital storytellers. Filmmakers Without Borders Grants offer funding and assistance for autonomous filmmakers to share their stories. Funds are obtainable for documentary, narrative, experimental, and new media projects in different levels of production.

Filmmakers Without Borders welcomes both novice and experienced filmmakers from all over the world to apply for grant funding. The application procedure is structured to showcase each individual project’s alignment with FWB’s mission and also to outline the filmmaker’s objectives, execution strategy, outcomes, and anticipated impact.

Worth of Filmmakers Without Borders Grants

Grants are obtainable in the listed amounts below (Tier 1 – Tier 4):

  • Development: $250, $500, $750, or $1000
  • Production: $500, $1000, $2500, or $5000
  • Post-production: $250, $500, $1000, or $2500
  • Applications on Film Festival: $100, $250, $500, or $750

Eligibility for Filmmakers Without Borders Grants

  • Candidates from any nation are encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates should be 18+ years old.
  • Candidates are required to be proficient in applicable digital technologies.
  • Candidates must be able to present samples of their work.
  • Applications and supporting materials have to be produced in English language.
    • NOTE: Completed films may be in any language.

Planned projects must address one of these themes:

  • social justice
  • women’s voices
  • youth voices
  • identity
  • cultural exchange
  • climate change

Planned projects must be aligned with these guidelines:

Proposed projects should meet the following requirements:

  • 100% of funds devoted to the film project (not to wages or large equipment purchases)
  • planned for conclusion within 365 days of application closing date
  • subtitled in English

How to Apply for Filmmakers Without Borders Grants

Filmmakers Without Borders welcomes both novice and experienced filmmakers from all over the world to apply for grant funding. The application procedure is structured to showcase each individual project’s alignment with FWB’s mission and also to outline the filmmaker’s objectives, execution strategy, outcomes, and anticipated impact.

All candidates fill out an online application and submit a range of supporting materials comprising a video essay. The video essay is a chance for candidates to introduce themselves, explain the project, and describe how it will be successfully executed.

Timeline

  • Upon successful submission of 1. the online application and 2. all supporting resources, the applicant’s application will then be sent to the applicable panel for initial review. The review procedure can take between 6-8 weeks from the application closing date contingent on the application cycle and number of applications being reviewed. 
  • Unsuccessful candidates are usually informed of their application status within 8 weeks of the application closing date.
  • Successful candidates usually receive formal offers about 2-3 months after the initial application closing date.

Application Deadline:

  • There are three grant rounds all through each year (Spring/Summer/Fall).
  • Every cycle has its own unique application closing date:
    • Spring: January 1st
    • Summer: June 1st
    • Fall: August 1st
  • Finished online applications and supporting resources received by the applicable closing date will be sent to the relevant selection panel for initial review. All grant cycles get the same consideration.
