Joseph Riddick ‘Rick’ Hendrick III was born on the 12th of July, 1949 in Warrenton, North Carolina. He started drag racing at the age of 14 in a self-built 1931 Chevrolet.

After college, he opened a small used-car lot and became the general sales manager. At the age of 16, Hendrick won the Virginia division of the Chrysler-Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest, a two-part test consisting of a written exam and a timed hands-on diagnosis and repair of defects planted on a car.

During high school, he considered being a professional baseball player. Then after high school, Rick decided to pursue a co-op work-study program with North Carolina State University and Westinghouse Electric Company in Raleigh, North Carolina.

After college, Rick opened a small used-car lot and became the general sales manager. He became the youngest Chevrolet dealer in the U.S. He now owns the Hendrick Automotive Group and has 80 franchises in ten different states.

Rick serves as chairman and the company is the sixth-largest dealership in the U.S. As a racer, he competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

He began a drag boat racing team in the late 70s that won three consecutive championships and set a world record. Rick Hendrick moved to NASCAR Model Sportsman Series and earned a victory.

Rick started All-Star Racing in 1984. He now owns the Hendrick Motorsports racing team and has four full-time drivers: Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, and William Byron. His drivers include Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Kasey Kahne.

Hendrick Motorsports has won 12 Monster Energy Cup Series championships. In 2017, Rick was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The sponsors for Hendrick Motorsports include NAPA, Hooters, Mountain Dew, Kelly Blue Book, Lowe’s, and more.
