Michael Phelps was born on the 30th of June, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland. He went to Rodgers Forge Elementary, Dumbarton Middle School, and Towson High School.
Phelps has two siblings, who are both older than him. His mother Deborah is a middle school principal while his father Michael is a retired Maryland State Trooper.
Swimming became a part of his life when he was 7 years old. This was mainly due to the influence of his sisters and to provide him with an outlet for his energy.
When he was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with ADHD. At age 10, Phelps held a national record for his age group in the 100-meter butterfly and started to train at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under coach Bob Bowman.
At age 15, Phelps was qualified for the USA Olympic team in the 2000 Summer Olympics. He was the youngest person to qualify for the team in 68 years.
He broke the world record for the 200-meter butterfly in the World Aquatics Championship Trials in 2001. That day, Phelps made history by becoming the youngest male ever to set a swimming world record.
Phelps won four gold medals, two silver medals, and broke five world records at the 2003 World Aquatics Championships.
