He began his career in 1947 by playing a role in the movie Miss Malini but became famous in the 1953 movie Thai Ullam. Gemini Ganesan passed on the 25th of March 2005 at the age of 84.

Gemini Ganesan Early Life and Career 

Ramasamy Ganesan popularly known as Gemini Ganesan was born on the 17th of November 1920 to inter-caste couples Ramaswamy and Bhagirathi Amma. He lost his father while in elementary school not long after losing his grandfather Narayanaswami.

After the death of his father, Gemini moved with his mother to stay with Muthulakshmi his aunt who was a medical doctor by profession and also a social reformer who stood up against some fetish practices and was one of the main campaigners for the abolition of the Devadasi system in India.

Gemini Ganesan studied at Ramakrishna Mission where he learned yoga and Sanskrit. From there on he went to high school before attending Maharajah’s College. He finally opted a degree Madras Christian College, Chennai.

He aspired to be a medical doctor like his aunt and was even promised a job after graduation by his father-in-law T.R. Alamelu but all that changed when the cold hands of death took T.R. Alamelu and he was left with no other choice but to engage in something else.

Ganesan tried enrolling in the Indian Air Force but it didn’t work out so he got a job as a lecturer in the department of chemistry at Madras Christian College where he had a brief spell before he got a job at Gemini production as an executive and was nicknamed Gemini by most of his colleagues.

He acted his first movie in 1947 titled Miss Malini but the movie went on to be a failure and you can’t find the movie it was as if it didn’t exist. He also played in Chakradhari but in a minor role and was relatively unknown.

However, Gemini had his major breakthrough in the 1953 movie Thai Ullam where he played as a villain. He turned from villain to play the hero in the movie Manam Pola Mangalyam but after that, he decided to focus on taking on romantic roles.

He acted in a few other movies but had his breakthrough into the Bollywood movie industry when he played in the movie ‘Miss Mary‘ (1957) which at that time became the biggest of his career.

Gemini continued playing romantic roles but towards the end of his career, he chose other roles.

He never was into politics but he was a successful businessman with investments in real estate and also directed movies.

In addition, Gemini suffered from renal failure and died in his house on the 22nd of March 2005 surrounded by his family.
