She started showing her love for music from an early age being raised as a Catholic and was introduced to Jazz as a child by her grandmothe. At age 11, she formed a girl group called the ‘Crystalettes’.

Khan stated that her name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi, or just Chaka which many thought she got from her time while in the Panthers in 1967, was given when she was 13 back in 1969 by a Yoruba Baba.

She attended Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy) before dropping out to perform in small musical groups around Chicago Area.

Chaka Khan first performance was with a group called the Cash McCall’s group Lyfe which her then-boyfriend, Hassan Khan was a member. They both later married in 1970.

She had a wonderful beginning in her early years of performing. Khan was picked by two members of a band known as Rufus as a replacement for rock n roll singer Paulette McWilliams.

In 1973, the group got signed by ABC records. The Rufus group released their eponymous debut album called ‘Rufus’ same year under the ABC Record label.

Unfortunately, the album didn’t get the kind of attention as the group expected. But, that quickly changed after the group collaborated with Steven Wonder on a song he had written for Khan titled ‘Tell Me Something Good’.

The song became the breakthrough hit jam for the group, reaching the third spot on the 1974 US Billboard Hot 100 and winning them their very first Grammy Award.

Khan’s days with the roup Rufus was shortlived following a stormy relationship between she (who was the group’s star attraction, credits to her powerful vocals and stage appearance) and some of its members especially Andre Fischer.

Though Khan remained in the group, signed a solo contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1978 and further releasing her debut solo album. This wasn’t received too well by the band. She later left the group to become a full-time solo artist.

She enjoyed a successful solo career, releasing albums after albums that would go platinum, selling over millions of copies. Then in 1996, she abruptly parted ways with Warner Bros. after releasing her ‘greatest-hits album, Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1’ stating that the label had neglected her and failed to release ‘Dare You to Love Me’.

Khan signed for Prince’s NPG Records label two-years-later but departed shortly after releasing hit singles such as Come 2 My House and Don’t Talk 2 Strangers.

On May 19, 2011, she was given the 2,440th Hollywood Walk of Fame star on a section of Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Khan went into rehab in July 2016, cancelling all her coming concerts and performances.

Then after two-years, she came back reborn with a new fire and released a new single called ‘Like Sugar’, which she collaborated with Major Lazer. The song was part of her 2019 album Hello Happiness.
